Dance Styles Over The Years

Dance styles really have changed over the years and the music as well. Dancers have added their own flavor to it to make it more up to date. I remember back in the day at school talent shows or at party’s you had dance groups Popping and Locking to the sounds the Gap Band and Parliament Funkadelic. Popping started in Los Angeles California in 1960s- 1970s, it is one of the original funk styles of street dance. If you don’t know what Popping is, “it’s based on the technique of quickly contrasting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body, referred to as a pop or hit, this done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with various movements and poses.” Then there was Hip-hop dance, which was a combination of popping, locking and break dancing. Hip-hop dancing is freestyle dance with a lot of improvising; dancers would battle each other to see who had the better moves. Hip-Hop dancing is more than 30 years old. The professional dance crews like Rock Steady Crew, The Lockers, and the Electric Boogaloos were instrumental in the evolution of hip-hop music. Youngsters today are doing these dances called the Jerkin and Hyphy. The Jerkin is a dance that is truly for the young, it gained popularity since 2009. Jerkin started on the streets Los Angeles California and has become popular on the East Coast , “the dance itself consist of moving your legs in and out called the “jerk”, and doing other moves such as the “reject”, “dip” and “pin drop”.  As this dance continued to grow, two rap groups wrote songs for this dance the New Boyz wrote “You’re a Jerk” and Audio Push wrote “Teach Me How to Jerk”. The hyphy dance is another dance that the youngsters do; it originated in the Bay Area California. It is a dance where their dancing out of control and again doing some amazing moves with there bodies, all this dancing is done to hip hop music. Wow! You have to be in good shape to do what these youngsters are doing. I am wondering what the new dance  youngsters will be a year from now.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty February 20, 1988. in Saint Michaels Barbados.
Rihanna is the oldest of three siblings, has two younger brothers.
Rihanna’s childhood was rocky, her Father was addicted to crack cocaine her parents marriage ended when she fourteen. Rihanna trained with the military of Barbados, she was in the army cadet sub-military program.
Rihanna and two other classmates of hers formed a singing group, they were introduced to Evan Rogers while he was vacationing in Barbados with his wife. The group audition for him, Rogers said “the minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist.”


Rihanna’s demo album took a year because she continued to go to school, she only recorded during summer and Christmas break. I say good for her.
Rihanna’s demo some how was heard by Jay-Z the president of Def Jam records at the time, he signed her admittedly. Rihanna’s first two album Music of the Sun and A Girl Like Me, considered in the reggae genre.
Rihanna’s look when she was produced by Jay-Z , look like a Beyonce` clone.  Rihanna’s style changed dramatically with the Good Girl Gone Bad album, some of the video’s to the songs on this album are out there. I guess you don’t have to know how to sing if your selling sex.


Rihanna’s Domestic violence episode in 2009, brought about STOParazzi to propose a law called “Rihanna’s Law” It would stop law enforcement from releasing crime victims photos to the media. Rihanna is not just a entertainer she is also a philanthropist, she has a foundation call Believe it helps terminally ill children. Rihanna is also involved in the marketing of her country of Barbados and she is the official face a tourism. When I was in Barbados in October, my tour guide told me that the highway we’re on is going to be change to the Rihanna Highway. He said “Rihanna has done a lot for Barbados, she deserve it.” I don’t particularly care for a lot of her sound or music, but some of it is catchy like “Rude Boy”,  “Take A Bow” and “Pon de Replay”.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Erykah Badu is a recording artist and actress who, until recently, was best known as "The First Lady of Neo-Soul" for her eccentric, musical mix of R&B, hip-hop and jazz. 

 Now, she has captured the entire world's attention by straying from her previously accredited high-fashion sense, to a fresher version--stripping naked in public to conclude her latest music video "Window Seat"  on March 17th.

The video is a one-take, slow motion stroll by Badu through the infamous Dealy Plaza in Dallas, Texas, at the very spot where President Kennedy was assassinated 47-years ago. Badu slowly takes off her clothes  while walking in front of adults and children, who are touring the hallowed and ill-fated path that Kennedy's motorcade took on Elm Steet before he was fatally shot in 1963.

Badu stands nude as the sound of a gunshot rings out, and her head snaps back violently. She then falls dead onto the pavement as the frame freezes on her sprawled nakedness--and you hear Badu narrate the closing words:

"They who play it safe are quick to assasinate what they do not understand.  They move in packs ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel most confident in groups, with less guilt to swallow.  They are us.  This is what we have become, afraid to respect an individual.  A single person within a circumstance, can move one to change--to love herself...to evolve". 

From what I gather based on various articles and her personal Twitter texts, Badu was trying to overcome her own individual fears, while combating what she calls the "Group Think" style of modern society. "I will not express my opinion if it opposes those I love and fear", she states. 

Badu admits she was petrified while shooting this video, but that lliberation began to set in, and she conquered many fears in those few moments. "I hope it will encourage others to do the same in their own way, and  I wasn't embarrassed by my nudity... because I was too busy looking for cops", she said. 

In fact, Badu was lucky not to have been arrested for indecent exposure, however, no one reported her-- and she also broke the law by filming without a permit. 

While escaping prosecution, Badu did not avert strong criticism from the press, and strong public outcry from nation-wide audiences...as well as those who saw it in person. Adult tourists were heard shouting: "This is a public place. You ought to be ashamed--put on your clothes".

All in all, I feel Badu showed poor taste and dis-respect, not only for common public decency, but for what's become a sacred public landmark (Dealy Plaza) that has marked time, and become a focal point of our national growth..

Perhaps I'll include more on Erykah Badu the 39-year old musical artist and actress in future blogs, as her successes include six albums and five film appearances--including her role as Rose Rose, an incest-victim daughter in the movie hit "The Cider House Rules".(One of my favorites)

But for now, Badu is the woman with the hottest music video around (a true 'walk on the wild side'), that was intended to overcome fear--and instead inspired controversy, along with a quantum-leap in fame.

Dana Elaine Owens(born March 18, 1970) known as the Queen of Rap, is a rapper, actress, singer and songwriter. The first time I heard of Queen Latifah was on Yo! MTV Raps in the late 80s the song was “Princess of the Posse”, I knew this girl had something special, I was right. Queen Latifah’s first album “All Hail the Queen was released in 1989, this album is still my all time favorite. Queen Latifah released three more albums “Nature of a Sista” in 1991, “Black Reign” in 1993, “Order in the Court”

in 1998. After Order in the Court, went in another direction she made a all jazz album entitled “The Dana Owens album” this album showcased her singing ability and could she sing. The Dana Owens album, his her best selling album to date it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2005. In 2007 Queen Latifah released Trav’lin’ Light, the song “I’m Gonna Live Till I Die” won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist and nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In 2008  Queen Latifah came out with another hip hop album called “All Hail the Queen II”. Queen Latifah wanted to mess with peoples head so a rumor was started that the album was to be titled ‘L’ Word”, because a rumor was going around that she was a lesbian, . Queen Latifah was also a accomplished actress she had a supporting roles in House Party 2, Juice and Jungle Fever. Queen Latifah had a starring role on the TV series Living Single from 1993-1998, she also wrote and performed the theme music. Queen Latifah also had her own talk show for two years and recurring roles on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Hangin with Mr. Cooper.

Her film career consist of the 1996 box office hit Set It Off, Living out Loud  and The Bone Collector. Queen Latifah was nominated for  Best Actress in a Supporting  Role for her role as Matron “Mama” Morton in the Oscar winning musical Chicago. In 2003 she starred with Steve Martin in Bringing Down The House. Other films where she had the lead or supporting role were Scary Movie 3, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Taxi, Kung Faux, Beauty Shop, Hairspray, Last Holiday, she was also the voice of Ellie the mammoth in Ice Age: The Melt Down her first voice role in animated film.

Latifah her stage name means “delicate” and “gentle” in Arabic, her cousin gave her this name when she was eight. Queen Latifah is also blessed with a gift from God and she is and always be one of my favorite person of this century.
