Here we go again[in my DMX voice]! I'm back in school and hate it! Why
did i sign up again?? SMH.. Well i am a very busy opinionated person and i
kinda like being an out of the box type person. It seems to fit me well and
naturally. Often i get the ‘that was out of left field’ comments and I'm used
to it but when it comes to Coultrain forget that a box ever existed. The
St.Louis born artist shatters any preconceived notion of musical genre of
categorization. Coultrain is indeed a talent (are you ready) he is a
drummer, visual artist and singer/songwriter. Oh and a poet. I wonder does
he do tuneups too. But on a serious note Coultrain is worth the ticket price.
Using words to paint pictures by using complex metaphors.
His first lp was self released in 2007 named ‘Adventures of Seymour
Liberty’. The fictional character Seymour Liberty would be a continuing
subject across for other releases.Coultrain would tell the story of the
character blurring the lines between imagination and autobiography.
Coultrain’s latest work ‘Side Effect of Make Believe;Divided for Love's Sake
is on fresh selects label and is out now. Check out ‘Kiss of Death’ which
shows his wordplay.Please dont ask me why his album titles sound like a
Johnny Depp movie series “Pirates of the Caribbean;Curse of the Black Pearl!!
LOL. But they are long and thought out so i guess you will have to
listen to figure it out. One thing's for sure Coultrain does not lack creativity
and you can forget about him being predictable. Coultrains albums
continue where the last one left off so its as if he’s one part novelist and
one part alternative R&B artist. You can tell from his wardrobe that he is his
own man trying to create a lane for himself and clearly succeeding. The
Coultrain is most definitely off the tracks but moving at a fast pace. If you

Adrian Marcel

Yes! Adrian Marcel East Oakland’s own has the whole package talent and looks. His looks remind me of a young El De Barge, but his sound is all his own. Adrian truly has a gift. Adrian Marcel is the real deal this young brother can write. He wrote the majority of songs from his “7 Days of Week” CD with Jane Hancock. It just amazes me that Adrian Marcel is so underrated. I’ve never heard him on the local radio stations and that is a shame! I think if he keeps writing his songs and singing the way he does, he is going to blow up. In February 2014, Adrian Marcel released the single "2AM," with a guest verse from Sage the Gemini. My favorite songs from 7 Days of Weak are “Timeless”, “My Life” and “Waiting”. I have seen some music videos that are a little crazy, but I must say this video is by far out to lunch. What in the world were they thinking when they came up with this video? This video is not for young children and some adults. This video and song is not meant to motivate, it is meant to get you moving. It sure is a funny video. Tiara Thomas

DJ Michael Ealey is known for finding underrated talent, to play on Streetwise Radio. He is playing Tiara Thomas this 24-year old talented singer, songwriter from Indianapolis, Indiana. I first heard of her on Wale’s song “Bad” featuring Tiara Thomas. I like Tiara’s version of the song “Bad”, better without Wale. The version Rihanna did in my opinion was awful. Tiara Thomas used social media to get herself out there. I think that was smart, otherwise we probably would not heard about this inventive young lady. Tiara released a five song from the “Dear Sallie Mae” album on October 8, 2013. The songs are “Tell Me Something”, “Popular”, “Gang Signs”, “Dear Sallie Mae” and “4Dolla Bill”. I Am Living Math

I my opinion there is not enough conscious poet-rappers in the music world. All the major record labels won’t give any political conscious artist or any artist with something real to say a record deal. As long as artists keep conforming to what the record labels want and selling out nothing will change. Well Narbui Selah happens to not be a sellout. She is a vocalist and spoken word artist. Her raps have you thinking about what’s really going on in this crazy world. Narbui released her independent debut album “I Am Living Math” in 2010. She hits it out of the park on her debut album. It’s a mix of hip hop, spoken word and passionate singing. This amazing artist is from Trenton, NJ but lives in Brooklyn, New York. I don’t know what it is about East Coast artist I think they are the best. That’s just my opinion. I like the way Narbui Selah uses metaphors. She has toured with and recorded with some heavy hitters such as Mos Def, Sista Soulja, Lauryn Hill, Big Pun, Poor Righteous Teachers, Mums and Sac-Roc. My favorite songs from “I Am Living Math” album are “U Already Know”, “What Am I Doing Here (featuring Sa-Roc)”, “Birdie”, “I’m Gone” and “Hookless”. Public Enemy Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp

Public Enemy in past has been known for their controversy’s. Well they’re back! Public Enemy released an album called “Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp” in July 2012. The opening track “Run Til It’s Dark”, is characteristic Public Enemy sound. I think the four most important songs on this album are “Get Up Stand Up”, “WTF”, “Catch the Thrown”, and “Run Til It’s Dark”. I have been listening to Public Enemy since the late 80s. I think they are still the best rap group ever. These so called rappers now days need to take note and rap about the real truth.

Public Enemy is from Long Island, New York. Public Enemy came on the scene in 1987, with their debut album “Yo! Bum Rush the Show”. In 1988 the released “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”, with their two hit singles "Don't Believe the Hype" and "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos". After twenty five years Public Enemy is still rapping about what’s going on in the world. Public Enemy is still doing their thing bringing the world the truth through their music. My favorite songs are, “Run Til Its Dark”, “Get Up Stand Up (featuring Brother Ali)”, “Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp (featuring Z-Trip)”, “I Shall Not Be Moved”, “Get It In (featuring Bumpy Knuckles)”, “WTF” and “Truth Decay”. Public Enemy has the second album due out sometime in September, The Evil Empire of Everything. It is supposed to be the album that talks to “Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp”. Public Enemy is the real deal of hip hop.

If you have not listened to Public Enemy you need to they are rapping some real truth. A lot of critics think Public Enemy is racist and very militant. I say to all those critics the truth hurts. Hip-Hop Group “theBREAX”

I like hip-hop if it’s positive. All that negative stuff is so discouraging. Well I was looking for positive Hip-Hop artists or groups that have something and encouraging too say. I found this group from San Diego California called “theBREAX”.The group consists of front man Ruslan, who is an Armenian refugee born in Baku, Azerbaijan. In the 1990s when Ruslan was a child, his family fled Baku, Azerbaijan to San Diego California due to religious persecution in his country. While living in San Diego Ruslan met and became friends with Baltimore native Beleaf. Beleaf came to San Diego to get a fresh start. Ruslan and Beleaf both had a love for Hip-Hop and a burning need to get better at it. They formed the group theBreax, so they could have a positive impact on the hip-hop culture in the San Diego community and the world. The group has grown to include Mic B on drums, Jruckers on keyboards and Bam on bass. theBreak has cultivated a large and diverse community of loyal fans through headlining their own shows. They have opened up for world-class acts like Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Arrested Development, Lecrae, War, and Fred Hammond. Their debut album “Never Arrive” came out in December 2011. It went number three on iTunes hip-hop charts. Christian hip-hop is on the rise and theBREAX is definitely doing their part to bring it to the world. These are some of the songs I like, “More Of / At the Core”, “Yap Yap”, “Brilliant Realness (feat. Sho Baraka)”, “OTIS TheBreax Over Mixtape”, “Never Arrive”, “All Powerful”, “100 hunnit” and “Paper Jam”. These brothers are so positive and inspiring. I’m so glad I found theBREAX they are certainly going on my playlist. Lupe Fiasco

Born on February 16, 1982 as Wasalu Muhammad Jaco better known as Lupe Fiasco, is a rapper, artist, producer and CEO Lupe Fiasco grew up on the Westside of Chicago. Lupe was one of nine children. His mother was a gourmet chef and his father was a Black Panther a prolific African drummer, karate teacher, engineer and owner of a karate schools and army surplus stores. When Lupe was five his parents divorced, but his father remained a significant part of his life. His father taught him to use an
AK-47 and other guns so he could protect himself from drug dealers that lived next door and in the neighborhood. Lupe and his siblings were well educated as children. They were only allowed watched public television read National Geographic magazines and encyclopedias. Lupe did not like hip hop when he was growing up because all the negative lyrics. When he heard Nas’ 1996 album, “It Was Written” he decided he was going to rap.
His group called Da Pak first song out was about drugs guns and women.
Lupe didn‘t like the direction he was going so he left the group and went solo.  Jay-Z and Nas lyricism had a profound affect on Lupe Fiasco style a rap, rap with a message. Lupe Fiasco song “Words I Never Said“, “The Show Goes On“, “Kick, Push.”, and Daydreamin” are my favorites songs. Lupe Fiasco is not only a rapper he is a entrepreneur he founded “Righteous Kung-Fu” a fashion design , sneaker, toys, video games, comic books, graphics for album covers and skateboards decks company. I like Lupe Fiasco because he is a young rapper that raps about social things that are going on in this world. Lupe Fiasco is now playing on Streetwise Radio.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty February 20, 1988. in Saint Michaels Barbados.
Rihanna is the oldest of three siblings, has two younger brothers.
Rihanna’s childhood was rocky, her Father was addicted to crack cocaine her parents marriage ended when she fourteen. Rihanna trained with the military of Barbados, she was in the army cadet sub-military program.
Rihanna and two other classmates of hers formed a singing group, they were introduced to Evan Rogers while he was vacationing in Barbados with his wife. The group audition for him, Rogers said “the minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist.”


Rihanna’s demo album took a year because she continued to go to school, she only recorded during summer and Christmas break. I say good for her.
Rihanna’s demo some how was heard by Jay-Z the president of Def Jam records at the time, he signed her admittedly. Rihanna’s first two album Music of the Sun and A Girl Like Me, considered in the reggae genre.
Rihanna’s look when she was produced by Jay-Z , look like a Beyonce` clone.  Rihanna’s style changed dramatically with the Good Girl Gone Bad album, some of the video’s to the songs on this album are out there. I guess you don’t have to know how to sing if your selling sex.


Rihanna’s Domestic violence episode in 2009, brought about STOParazzi to propose a law called “Rihanna’s Law” It would stop law enforcement from releasing crime victims photos to the media. Rihanna is not just a entertainer she is also a philanthropist, she has a foundation call Believe it helps terminally ill children. Rihanna is also involved in the marketing of her country of Barbados and she is the official face a tourism. When I was in Barbados in October, my tour guide told me that the highway we’re on is going to be change to the Rihanna Highway. He said “Rihanna has done a lot for Barbados, she deserve it.” I don’t particularly care for a lot of her sound or music, but some of it is catchy like “Rude Boy”,  “Take A Bow” and “Pon de Replay”.

Last month, Gangstagrass members Rench and T.O.N.E-z attended the Creative Arts Emmys for their nomination in the Best Original Song for a Television Show Category. The song, “Long Hard Times to Come” was written as the theme for the show Justified on FX. Wyclef Jean Running For President Of Haiti

Wyclef Jean a Haitian-American recording artist, record producer and politician. Is running for President of Haiti he announced it on Tuesday August 3, 2010. Wyclef is running against his uncle former ambassador of the United States, this should make for good family conversation around the dinner table.

I think Wyclef is needed in Haiti, he won’t in my opinion take advantage of the people like the past Presidents of Haiti. He has always been for the people and about the people of Haiti. Like his song says “If I were President I’d get elected on Friday, assassinated on Saturday, buried on Sunday, then go back to work on Monday”. If this is a man who believes in a cause, then I have not seen one in my life time. The election is on November 28, 2010, this will be historic.  I truly hope the Haitian people, elect him President it will be good for Haiti. .

Mary J. Blige was a artist that I didn’t particularly like when she firstcame on the music scene. To me she didn’t really have the chops, she sung off key to me. Her live performances really sucked, I saw hear perform on
the Grammy awards in 1997 she sung “Not Gon’ Cry” she was so off key I couldn’t stand it.

Mary J. was the second of four children her mother was a nurse and her father was a jazz musician. Mary J’s father taught her to sing, he should have given her voice lessons. Mary J. signed with Uptown record when she
was 17 years old, but her singing career consists of back ground vocals.

Mary J’s first debut was in the summer of 1992 on MTV, "What’s the 411?" album was released. “You Remind Me” was her first single it was alright, it sounded better on the radio, but it was something about her voice. When
Sean “Puffy” Combs hailed her as “the queen of hip-hop soul” I said really! Mary J used to be a Information Directory operator, that’s how "What’s the 411?", album came about. Her second album “My Life” was more painful and real, I don’t mean the singing but the lyrics in the songs,
like “Not Gon’ Cry”, “I’ll Be there For You” and “My Life”. Mary J later admitted that she dealing with a abusive relationship with boyfriend Ci Hailey of Jodeci, drug addiction, alcoholism and depression.

Mary J won her first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for platinum single “I’ll Be There For You","You’re All I Need to Get
By”,  with Method Man. Mary J’s third album Share My World had five hit singles “Love Is All We Need” (featuring Nas), “I Can Love You”( featuring Lil’ Kim), “Everything”, Missing You”(UK only) and “Seven Days.” Mary J won a American Music Award for “Favorite Soul/R&B Album.”

I started liking Mary J Blige when her last six albums came out “Mary”,“No More Drama”, “Love & Life”, “Breakthrough”, “Growing Pains” and “Stronger with Each Tear”. Mary J won me over. Mary J’s will always be apart of history, with her performance at the Presidential Inauguration
Celebration performing “Lean on Me” and “Just Fine” was inspiring. Mary J Blige’s is a singer, producer, songwriter, actress and rapper. I can say since she has paid her dues she can be crowned the Queen of Hip-Hop.

Since the formation of the group in 2002, E.A.R.T.H. (which stands for Everything Around Revolves Through Hip Hop) has been making noise in the southern California music scene. Comprised of four members (Write Words, NOE, Double Negative and Ro Tone) with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, E.A.R.T.H. is a multicultural hip-hop group who is bridging the gap between different social and ethnic backgrounds.

Constantly compared to the legends of Hip-hop such as; De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast “These cats are crazy. You guys are incredible; definitely won’t be long before you guys can be heard with the rest of the hiphop cats such as Outkast. You remind me of De La Soul; Ya’ll are like the West coast De La Soul to me, that’s one of my favorite hip-hop groups ever in hip-hop. Ya’ll are dope” - Tim Kelley & Bob Robinson (6-time Grammy Producers)

As a group, we embrace poignant, witty, well thought out lyrics, which at times are positive and geared towards exciting everybody. We have mass appeal and we easily appeal to those who like underground and mainstream/commercial hip-hop music.

E.A.R.T.H. released our 1st album self titled in 2005. It had modest success however; the song "Feeling Good, Feeling Great" became an underground sensation voted top 10 songs of 2006 by Breakthruradio.com and became a featured group. "Feeling Good, Feeling Great" featured in many other internet radio sites and even an independent film.

Our sophomore album “Grass Roots: From The Ground Up,” was recently released in April of 2009 and have gained praised for its clever songs such as “Sexin’ After Textin” and metaphorical song about superheroes “Superman Lyrics.” With its “Feel Good Music” sound, no wonder listening to E.A.R.T.H. will make you “Feelin’ Alive” and “Get Off The Wall.”

mtvU Campus Invasion Tour in 2007 where E.A.R.T.H. shared stages with R&B singer Monica, Fabolous, Rick Ross, Crime Mob, Rich Boy, Shop Boyz and The Pack.

E.A.R.T.H has also shared stages with artists; Far East Movement (FM), Pacific Division, Copywrite,  E-Swift, 2mex, Sly Boogie, Nina Sky, Dirty Birdy, Twista, Killer Mike, Defari, Evidence, and many others. Recently Nominated for mtvU Woodie Awards 2009.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Erykah Badu is a recording artist and actress who, until recently, was best known as "The First Lady of Neo-Soul" for her eccentric, musical mix of R&B, hip-hop and jazz. 

 Now, she has captured the entire world's attention by straying from her previously accredited high-fashion sense, to a fresher version--stripping naked in public to conclude her latest music video "Window Seat"  on March 17th.

The video is a one-take, slow motion stroll by Badu through the infamous Dealy Plaza in Dallas, Texas, at the very spot where President Kennedy was assassinated 47-years ago. Badu slowly takes off her clothes  while walking in front of adults and children, who are touring the hallowed and ill-fated path that Kennedy's motorcade took on Elm Steet before he was fatally shot in 1963.

Badu stands nude as the sound of a gunshot rings out, and her head snaps back violently. She then falls dead onto the pavement as the frame freezes on her sprawled nakedness--and you hear Badu narrate the closing words:

"They who play it safe are quick to assasinate what they do not understand.  They move in packs ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel most confident in groups, with less guilt to swallow.  They are us.  This is what we have become, afraid to respect an individual.  A single person within a circumstance, can move one to change--to love herself...to evolve". 

From what I gather based on various articles and her personal Twitter texts, Badu was trying to overcome her own individual fears, while combating what she calls the "Group Think" style of modern society. "I will not express my opinion if it opposes those I love and fear", she states. 

Badu admits she was petrified while shooting this video, but that lliberation began to set in, and she conquered many fears in those few moments. "I hope it will encourage others to do the same in their own way, and  I wasn't embarrassed by my nudity... because I was too busy looking for cops", she said. 

In fact, Badu was lucky not to have been arrested for indecent exposure, however, no one reported her-- and she also broke the law by filming without a permit. 

While escaping prosecution, Badu did not avert strong criticism from the press, and strong public outcry from nation-wide audiences...as well as those who saw it in person. Adult tourists were heard shouting: "This is a public place. You ought to be ashamed--put on your clothes".

All in all, I feel Badu showed poor taste and dis-respect, not only for common public decency, but for what's become a sacred public landmark (Dealy Plaza) that has marked time, and become a focal point of our national growth..

Perhaps I'll include more on Erykah Badu the 39-year old musical artist and actress in future blogs, as her successes include six albums and five film appearances--including her role as Rose Rose, an incest-victim daughter in the movie hit "The Cider House Rules".(One of my favorites)

But for now, Badu is the woman with the hottest music video around (a true 'walk on the wild side'), that was intended to overcome fear--and instead inspired controversy, along with a quantum-leap in fame.
