There are a lot of hip hop and rap artists out there that are positive and underrated. Ryan Leslie happens to be one of them. My son introduced me to him a couple of years ago. I enjoy his music because no matter whether he’s singing or rapping, he has a message in his lyrics that you can relate too. Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Stockton California Ryan Leslie is multi-talented and intelligent. He received a 1600 on his SAT score and graduated from Harvard at the age of 19. Ryan Leslie sings, raps, write songs, produces records, arranges music, plays the guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and trumpet. Ryan’s debuted in 2007 with his single "Diamond Girl" and he just keeps put out fantastic music. Ryan Leslie has been doing his thing since the age 14. He was tutoring kids and traveling as a musical ambassador. Ryan Leslie is the whole package, it amazes me how underrated he is. Some of my favorite songs are "Diamond Girl", "Addiction", “Pleaze Pleaze Pleaze”, "How It Was Supposed to Be", “Glory” and "Maybachs and Diamonds". Madlib

Madlib is an artist that blends jazz, funk & hip hop music with his beats and makes incredible music. Madlib’s giving name is Otis Jackson Jr. Madlib was born in Oxnard California and is living in Los Angeles. This 40 year old DJ, multi-instrumentalist, MC, and music producer has incredible amount of talent. I truly enjoy the way he takes his beats and mixes it into a hip hop, jazz and funk tunes. Madlib is has collaborated with numerous hip hop artists, including The Alkaholiks, Mos Def, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, A.G. , Madvillain, and the late J Dilla. Madlib has opened my eyes to a lot of different music and the way it is done. Madlib has a single out called“Shame” it is a real serious song. Madlib’s music just makes me feel elated. Sammie Coming of Age

When he came on the music scene with his 1999 hit single "I Like It", off his debut album "From the Bottom to the Top", this twelve year old seem to be the next rising soul and pop singer. Well that was not the case for this singer. Was it the management that was holding him back or the record label? If you fast forward to 2006 his debut single "You Should Be My Girl" off his second album “Sammie” shows that he still has what it takes. Sammie is coming out with his third album in 2013 called “Coming of Age”. Is this album that is going to push him into soul and pop star status? I was listening too “Body Rock” and “Come And Get Down” like both of these songs. Sammie has proven again that he can still hang with the new school R&B singers, Trey Songz, Bobby Valentino, and Chris Brown. He has the whole package talent and looks to be a star. 9TH Wonder “Tutankhamen (Valley of the Kings)”

9^th Wonder says, “Hip-Hop is the voice of at least 2 generations. At one time, it was the POSITIVE voice. Chuck D was the black history teacher I never had, along with countless other black Americans my age. It can be that again, but with the right voices and the right players. As the late Curtis Mayfield said, “We must educate and Well as Entertain.” I agree. Over the years some hip hop artists have become so negative. There aren’t that many positive hip hop artist that are being played on the on-air radio stations. 9th Wonder’s given name is Patrick Denard Douthit, he was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on January 15, 1975. 9th Wonder’s started listening to hip hop when he was seven years old. He absorbed the music, culture of the art form while in middle and high school, gaining experience in music theory. He decided to pursue a music career while attending North Carolina Central University. 9^th Wonder is a master beat maker and sampler. He has sampled some great music from one of my favorite artists who was politically conscious of his times, the late great Curtis Mayfield. Al Green was also one of his big influences. The heavy bass lines in his songs were due to the production of J Dilla, Pete Rock and DJ Premier. 9^th Wonder has been sought after by some well-known artists like, Mary J. Blige, Jean Grae, Wale, Jay-Z, Murs, Drake, Buckshot, Chris Brown, Destiny's Child, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Ludacris, Mac Miller, David Banner, and Lecrae to name a few. 9^th Wonder has a new solo project out “Tutankhamen (Valley of the Kings)”. This album is a chill out album it has a soulful vibe it has my heading bobbing to the beat of the songs. My favorites are “WindyJamSoul”, “WhenLoveIsNew”, “ImABeastSoul!!!!”, “Fredathump” and “JustMyThoughtsSoul”. Don’t miss out on this album.

Akua Naru

What can I say about Akua Naru amazing, great, marvelous, awesome, original a pure genius? Akua Naru is a Hip Hop/Rap artist her music has a jazzy sound that you can listen to all day. Akua Naru is from New Haven, Connecticut, but now resides in Cologne, Germany. I like every song I have listened to while writing this. This is real Hip Hop music it is so fresh and smooth. Here are some of my favorites from her debut album “The Journey Aflame”, “The Backflip”, "The Block", “The World Is Listening”, “Tales Of Men feat. African Footprint”, “The Jones Feat. Mic Donet” and “Find Yourself”. Akua Naru takes her experiences in her life travels and brings it to her music for the world to hear. The lyrics in her songs are positive and inspiring. Streetwise Radio DJ Michael Ealey suggested that I listen to Akua Naru because he is playing one of her songs “The Blackflip” on Streetwise Radio Big Hop. I am so glad he suggested it, this young lady is awesome. I am a fan for life. If you have not heard of Akua Naru listen to her and you will be a fan too.

B.O.B. – Strange Clouds

The first time I ever heard of B.o.B. was in 2010 when I was riding in the car with my son listening to the song “Nothin On You“ .and I said is that Bruno Mars? He said yes..B.o.B., I really liked it. I started listen to B.o.B. he has had main stream success with his the songs “Nothin On You” and “So Good” .were made for the radio. B.o.B. released a new CD in April 2012 called Strange Clouds, this CD has a little something for the true rap fan and something for people like me who likes to sing along to catchy melodies and choruses. The songs I like on this CD are “Castles”, “Where Are You (B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray)”, “Bombs Away (feat. Morgan Freeman)”, “Arena”, “So Good”, “Circles” and “So Hard to Breathe”, the rest of the songs on the CD are good as well. B.o.B seems to have fans of different ages like me who can appreciate his versatility. I feel you should be versatile singer, so that way you will be around for a long time. Estelle

Born Estelle Fanta Swaray on January 18, 1980 in Hammersmith, London she was one of eight brothers and sisters. Estelle is a multi-talented R an B singer-songwriter, rapper and record producer. Estelle grew up listening to reggae, American gospel and R an B music. Estelle discovered hip hop by hanging out with her uncle who was always playing Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane. Estelle got her big break in the early 2000’s when she was visiting Los Angeles. She saw Kanye West sitting in a restaurant went up to him ask for an introduction to John Legend. When Estelle finally got that introduction John Legend helped produce two songs on her debut album. Estelle won a MOBO Award for Best Newcomer in 2004 with her songs “1980” and “Free” from her debut album, “The 18^th Day”. I like the song “1980”. This song has me reminiscing about those sunny Saturdays kicking at the park playing dominoes. Estelle’s second album “Shine” was released in 2008 this was the album that really got her career kicked into overdrive especially with the single “American Boy” which was produced by Will I Am from the Black Eye Peas. This song is so catchy I still like hearing it. Estelle has worked with a variety of talented artist in the world of Rap, R an B and Pop like Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, John Legend, Rick Ross, Robin Thicke, Janelle Monae, Sean Paul, Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Nas and Kardinal Offishall. Estelle’s third album “All of Me” was released in February 28, 2012. The song “Break My Heart (featuring Rick Ross) is the lead single on the album it would have been a good song if Rick Ross was not on it he made the song terrible. The songs I like on this album are “Speak My Mind”, “Thank You”, “Back to Love”, “Wonderful Life”, “Something’s Wrong”. Over all this album has something for everyone it is a collection of R an B, Rap and Pop music. Estelle did her thing on this album I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland was born Kelendria Trene Rowland on February 11, 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of seven Kelly’s mother left her father because he was an abusive alcoholic. When Kelly was eight, Kelly and her mother relocated to Houston, where she joined a rapping and dancing group with Beyonce` Knowles and LaTavis Roberson. The name of the group was called Girl’s Tyme; they performed on the television show Star Search the biggest talent show at the time and lost the competition. In 1993 the group changed their name to Destiny’s Child. Destiny’s Child was very successful between 1999 and 2002; the group broke up to focus on their solo careers. In 2002 Kelly and Nelly one of my all-time favorite male artist team up on the single “Dilemma” this is still one of my favorite songs. Kelly won a Grammy for Best Rap/Song Collaboration and Billboard Award in 2003. Kelly’s debut solo album Simply Deep had a mixture of alternative-R&B and rock music, Brandy and Solange Knowles sung background vocals. The songs that are my favorites from this album are “Can’t Nobody”, “Beyond Imagination”, “Every Time Walk Out That Door”, “Heaven”, “Stole” and “Dilemma. In 2007 Kelly came out with Ms. Kelly album with the hit single “Like This” featuring Eve and “Work” I really like “Work”. My favorite songs on the Ms. Kelly album are “Ghetto” (featuring Snoop Dogg)”, “Every Thought is You”, “Like This”, “Flashback”, The Show (featuring Tank)” and “Come Back”. The Ms. Kelly album should have been released in the United States first I think it would have been more successful. In 2009 Kelly went in a different direction, she left her manager Matthew Knowles and Columbia Records. Kelly did house collaboration with French DJ David Guetta’s “When Love Takes Over” in which was the lead single for Davis Guetta’s One Love album in 2009. This song is high energy, I like it Kelly rocks! Kelly recorded the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup “Everywhere You Go” with international artists called Rhythm of South Africa United. Kelly did her thing on the Here I Am album; my favorite songs are “Turn It Up”, “Im dat chick”, “Feelin Me Right Now (featuring Rico Love)” and “Lay It On Me”. Kelly is nominated for a 2012 Grammy for “Motivation” (featuring Lil’ Wayne)” in which Rico Love wrote. Kelly Rowland I my opinion will be around for quite some time. Her willingness to work with artists of all genres of music keeps Kelly Rowland fresh. I hope she wins the Grammy, she deserves it.

SA-ROC an Amazing Talent

It’s about time there is a female emcee that is spitting true knowledge. Sa-Roc is truly talented, she talking about things that are relevant not this crap that is playing on the radio. Sa-Roc was born and raised in the Southeastern quadrate Washington, DC in an Afrocentric household. Sa-Roc grew up listening Go-Go a sub-genre of funk music that originated in Washington, DC. In the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, Sa-Roc also grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Lenny Kravitz and The Cranberries. Sa-Roc is a writer and poet. Sa-Roc was 19 years old when she started rapping her interest was piqued so she decided to write a rap. Sa-Roc was not serious until she met Sol Messiah, a Atlanta producer and Be-Boy. I think this meeting was a gift from the ‘Almighty’, because we would not have heard about this talented female emcee. Sa-Roc should be played on the radio. It’s a shame that the major record companies don’t know what to do with true talent, or should I say they are afraid of true talent because they can’t mold them into a cash machine. Like Nicki Minja, and Rihanna they are so made up and commercial. Sa-Roc is a beautiful black woman who doesn’t have to be made up plus she has talent. My favorite Sa-Roc songs are “Valley Of The Queen”, “Endustry”, “The Girl Who Could Fly”, “Dark MatterZ” and “Just-Us (4 Troy). If you have not heard any of Sa-Roc music I suggest you YouTube it, listen to her music the knowledge she rapping in all of her songs is what needs to be said and heard. EVE

Eve was born Eve Jihan Jeffers on November 10, 1978, she is a rapper, record producer and actress. Eve grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while she was in school she sang in many choirs Eve formed (Dope Girl Posse or D.G.P.) this group sung songs from En Vogue and Color Me Badd. After Eve’s manager saw this rap group called ABC he said they should rap. Eve went solo after the rap group she formed split up. That was the start of “Eve of Destruction.” Eve became the first female rap artist on Billboard 200 at number one with “Let There Be Eve...Ruff Ryders’ First Lady.” Eve is also an actress she played in Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business with Ice Cube. Eve appeared with Vin Diesel in xXx, The Cookout with Queen Latifah and The Woodsman with Kevin Bacon. Eve in my opinion is one of the great ladies of rap. Her lyrics in her songs are so deep. The song “Love Is Blind” (featuring Faith Evans) is talking about domestic violence, I love this song she is speaking the truth. Eve’s song “Let Me Blow Your Mind” with Gwen Stefani is so good Eve says “It’s only been a year now I got my foot through the door and I aint goin nowhere”. Eve’s “Gangsta Lovin” (featuring Alicia Key) song is one of my favorites. Eve is in my opinion is and will always be one of the best female lyricist she comes deep and hard. Kelis

Kelis Rogers is an artist with her own style; her voice has a different sound on each song. Kelis was born on August 21, 1980 in Harlem, New York, she was raised by her Puerto Rican-Chinese mother, a fashion designer,and her African American father was a Pentecostal Minister and jazz musician. Kelis started off singing in the church choir and the Girls Choir of Harlem. Kelis attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts in Manhattan, while there she played the saxophone, violin and piano. When she graduated with the help of the Neptunes production team she formed a band and landed a record deal. Kelis’s debut “Kaleidoscope” was released in 1999 this album sold 249,000 copies to date, her single “Caught Out There“, peaked to Number 9 on the Bill Board Hot R&B chart, I like that song it made me feel like saying that sometimes.. Her third album hit single “Milkshake” from the “Tasty” album was nominated for a Grammy in 2004 that was a popular song it was catchy I remember singing it. Kelis album “Flesh Tone” in my opinion is not so good but it has two songs I like are.  “Acapella” and “4^th Of July.” This album is high energy, I guess if you’re a Kelis Rogers fame you might like it. Dance Styles Over The Years

Dance styles really have changed over the years and the music as well. Dancers have added their own flavor to it to make it more up to date. I remember back in the day at school talent shows or at party’s you had dance groups Popping and Locking to the sounds the Gap Band and Parliament Funkadelic. Popping started in Los Angeles California in 1960s- 1970s, it is one of the original funk styles of street dance. If you don’t know what Popping is, “it’s based on the technique of quickly contrasting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body, referred to as a pop or hit, this done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with various movements and poses.” Then there was Hip-hop dance, which was a combination of popping, locking and break dancing. Hip-hop dancing is freestyle dance with a lot of improvising; dancers would battle each other to see who had the better moves. Hip-Hop dancing is more than 30 years old. The professional dance crews like Rock Steady Crew, The Lockers, and the Electric Boogaloos were instrumental in the evolution of hip-hop music. Youngsters today are doing these dances called the Jerkin and Hyphy. The Jerkin is a dance that is truly for the young, it gained popularity since 2009. Jerkin started on the streets Los Angeles California and has become popular on the East Coast , “the dance itself consist of moving your legs in and out called the “jerk”, and doing other moves such as the “reject”, “dip” and “pin drop”.  As this dance continued to grow, two rap groups wrote songs for this dance the New Boyz wrote “You’re a Jerk” and Audio Push wrote “Teach Me How to Jerk”. The hyphy dance is another dance that the youngsters do; it originated in the Bay Area California. It is a dance where their dancing out of control and again doing some amazing moves with there bodies, all this dancing is done to hip hop music. Wow! You have to be in good shape to do what these youngsters are doing. I am wondering what the new dance  youngsters will be a year from now.

Beastie Boys

When the Beastie Boys started in 1979 they were a hardcore punk band. John Berry the original guitarist suggested the name “Beastie Boys”. The letters B.E.A.S.T.I.E. stands for “Boys Entering Anarchistic State Towards Internal Excellence”. The Beastie Boys performed their first Hip Hop track “Cocky Puss” in 1983, with “Cocky Puss“ success they switched from hardcore punk to rap. The Beastie Boys recorded “Licensed to Ill” in 1986. I like this album, especially the songs “Fight For Your Right (To Party), “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”, “Paul Revere“, & “Brass Monkey”. Rolling Stone  magazine famous headline was, “Three Idiots Create a Masterpiece”. This album was the best selling rap album of the 1980s and was the first album to go No. 1 on Billboard album chart where it stayed for five weeks. On the Urban album chart it reached No. 2. Beastie Boys first single from this album “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” reached No. 7 on Billboard Hot 100. There was controversy with the Licensed to Ill tour. There were female members dancing in cages a giant motorized inflatable penis, lawsuits and arrests. The Beastie Boys put out  several more albums “Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head” in 1992, This album had funk and jazz songs “Lighten Up” and Something’s Got to Give” as well as hardcore punk song “Time for Livin”. In 1994 they released III Communition, the album debut No. 1 on Billboard Top 200 & No. 2 on R&B/hip hop album chart. “Sabotage” was a hit on the modern rock charts. ”Hello Nasty” was released on July 14, 1998 this album went straight to No. 1 in the US, the Uk, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden. The Beastie Boys have a new album out called “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two” I like this album. The song Funky Donky reminds me of an old Parliament tune. Nas is featured on the song “Too Many Rappers”. I like “Nonstop Disco Powerpack” song it has that old school rap sound.  I think the Beasties Boy’s may have another hit album. Sean John Combs was born in Harlem New York November 4, 1969, son of Janice and Melvin Earl Combs. He grew up in Mount Vernon, New York. When Combs was a child, his father, aged 33, was an associate of Frank Lucas (The New York drug lord), who was shot to death in his car at a Manhattan park after attending a party. Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes both stated they were close to Melvin Combs. Sean Combs played football at Mount Saint Michael Academy; in 1986 his team won the division title Sean Combs graduated in 1987. Sean Combs got his nickname “Puff” from his father, because he would “huff and puff” when he was angry.


 While attending Howard University in Washington DC he was good at marketing and a party promoter. He dropped out of school and worked full time at Uptown records. He had a hand in developing Jodeci and signing and producing Mary J. Blige. Bad Boy Records was established in in 1993, after being fired from Uptown Records. Puffy Daddy took two artists with him, The Notorius Big B.I.G. and Craig Mack when he started Bad Boy Records. That’s all he needed he blew up. After that he was signing artist like Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, Father MC, 112 and Total, and others. That’s when; The Hitmen an in house production team was formed.


In 1991 as a concert promoter and producer, he went by the name of Puff Daddy. Puff Daddy has had his challenges with the law. In 1991 he was promoting a concert at City College of New York featuring Heavy D, the place was overcrowded a stampede ensued nine people died. Puff Daddy was sued in 1997 for landlord neglect by Inge Bongo.
 Puff Daddy was arrested for aggravated assault in 1999 and gun charges but he always got off.


Puff Daddy by this time was on his way to the top. Puff Daddy debut single “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” was like his anthem. His debut album “No Way Out” won him a Grammy Award in 1998. Puff Daddy changed his name to P Diddy in 2001 he wanted to change his bad boy image. Now he just goes by Diddy. Diddy has his hands in television; he was on a reality show called Making The Band in 2007. In 2008 he came out with his own reality show I Want to Work for Diddy. Diddy now has a new album Last Train To Paris is in store now. “Hello Good Morning” his single you can hear on Streetwise Radio Big Hop 7-8 pacific standard time.


I can say Diddy is not only a promoter, producer, actor, and fashion designer. Diddy is the true definition of what it means to be an entrepreneur.

"Nicki Minaj"-- EYE CANDY and an EAR-FULL of talent!

If looks could kill, then 'Nicki Minaj' would be hard to live around, but, in fact....she's extremely difficult not to look at, having captured the sharp notice of rap enthusiasts, and music fans throughout America!

Still shy of releasing her first album, this Afro and Indo-Trinidadian beauty has still managed to liven up 'My Space' and 'You Tube' with sexy photos of her voluptuous body, and samples of a unique singing talent that has quickly vaulted Minaj to the top of the rap world.

Born 25 years ago in Jamaica Queens, New York, Onika Tanya Maraj grew up with an abusive, drug addict father who once tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire.  After that, Nicki vowed to give her mom strength by proclaiming, "If I'm successful, I can change her life!"  By studying singing and acting, and then graduating from La Guardia High School in Manhattan, Minaj changed her own  life as well....forever.

First working as an administrative assistant, Minaj dedicated all her free time to music, and in 2004 she began singing background vocals and hooks for local rappers.  However, she wanted to "stand out" more than the average dime-a dozen female singer, so Minaj began writing and performing her own raps.

Upon branching out on 'My Space', "Dirty Money" CEO 'Fendi' noticed and signed her to appear on his label, and his new DVD "The Come Up'.  Soon afterward, rapper 'Lil Wayne' called 'Fendi' and negotiated a meeting with Nicki, who won him over with a fresh style and her independent writing ability.

As the new face of his "Young Money" label, Lil Wayne and Minaj cut mix tape style remakes of tracks such as "Sunshine", "Big Spender", and "Higher Than a Kite".

In 2007, Nicki released her own mixtape called "Playtime is Over' where she posed as a 'Barbie' doll on the cover.  Then, in 2008, she put out a controversial mixed CD called "Sucka Free" which paid tribute to fellow rapper 'Lil Kim'....with Nicki pictured spreading her legs on promotional posters.

She also appeared in that year's July issue of 'XXL' magazine, and won 'Female Artist of The Year' at the "Underground Music Awards'. She would eventually receiver six 'BET Award' nominations in 2010.

Meanwhile, two other mixtapes "Beam Me Up Scotty", and "Barbie" followed before Minaj finally released her first single called "Massive Attack" this past April.  This exotically performed song is produced by 'Sean Garrett' and 'Alex Da Kid', and includes a cameo appearance by 'Amber Rose'. 

Its music video was shot in the desert near Lancaster, California, and has already premiered on BET.

"Massive Attack" will head up Minaj's much anticipated debut album, set for release this summer.  The album was scheduled for release three months ago, but Minaj didn't want to rush it, for quality's sake.

"I'm a perfectionist, and I want this buzz to surpass everyone's expectations, especially those who support me.  I don't want to disappoint them", she says.

Minaj's musical style is heavily influenced by 'Lauryn Hill', and 'Natasha Bedingfield', as well as the unpredictable rhymes of 'Missy Elliott'....and,  the sexually charged attitudes of 'Lil Kim' and 'Foxy Brown'.  She's also cited 'Jada Pinkett Smith' as a motivator for her desire to eventually become an actress.

As far as image goes, the Nicki Minaj of today seems to want to tone things down a bit, as opposed to the earlier "look at me" style of grabbing everyone's attention. "I think it's important for people to get accustomed to seeing the female rapper again.  I'm not sure where I fit into that spectrum yet, as I'm still trying to prove myself", she says.

"Before, people thought of me as a sex symbol or a wanna be sex symbol, but I don't want people thinking I'm up here trying to be cute;  I'm here to entertain, and entertaining is a lot more than exuding sex appeal.  I think watching someone try to be sexy is "wack", Minaj explains. 

"I'm trying to just show my true personality.  When I was in elementary school, I had a teacher who would stand up on a desk and just whisper, as we all turned around wondering what this lunatic was doing.  But, she achieved what she wanted!  She wanted us to stop talking and listen!"

"That is why I need to mellow things down, so people can really listen what I have to say", explains Minaj.

Somehow I don't think it will matter whether she's sitting down, standing on a table, dancing on stage, singing in a dessert, sitting by a pool, or basking on a beach, Rap audiences and audiences everywhere will all take time to watch, and listen...to NICKI MINAJ!
